A carbon credit is a tradable unit representing the right to emit one tonne of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions (MAF, Sept 2007). Units can be devolved for the sequestration of carbon dioxide in forest carbon sinks, or for the avoidance of the emission.
Under the Kyoto Protocol, the increase in carbon stock of a post-1989 forest sink since 1 January 2008 is considered to generate ‘Kyoto compliant carbon credits’, which are tradable internationally, and can be used to offset greenhouse gas emissions in order to meet national emission targets. Please contact the consultancy if you would like to discuss a potential planting/carbon project.
